about

Soundtrack for video installation "Star Trick: The Next Iteration."

The infinite "episode" of this spaceship drama unfolds from an algorithm, a "drunken walk" through a statistical "script". The visitor to this "television program" can change the "character" of the piece by changing the CHARACTERS of the piece. All you have to do is step up to the "Identity Controller" and assert a rare dominance over the paradigm of GENRE.

You can also trigger the "theme song" at any time. You can also change the "character" of the piece by changing the soundtrack "genre." There are three genres to choose from -

Vintage
Canned
Weird

"Vintage" is inspired mostly by the soundtrack from "The Forbidden Planet" by Louis and Bebe Barron. Performed entirely on a modular synthesizer. The sounds are filtered, fed back into themselves, saturated and decaying. The resonance is dark, atonal, otherworldly, mysterious.

"Canned" was intended to be banal, playing only presets that come bundled with software synthesizers. The aesthetic was intended as 90s sci-fi, from a can. The result was more complex, but still retaining the "can." The resonance is melancholic, sterile, pseudo-profound.

"Weird" is the catch-all for inappropriate yet still sci-fi aesthetics. The textures and concept are meant to create the most confusing juxtapositions and emotional suggestions for the characters. The resonance is emotionally jumbled, anti-genre, mechanical, abrasive, glitchy, and occasionally silly.
